Filler and Coating Pigment: Limestone-based products, such as calcium carbonate, are widely used as fillers and coating pigments in printing paper and board to enhance brightness, opacity, and smoothness.

Pulp and Paper Production: Lime plays a crucial role in multiple stages of pulp and paper production, including:

  • Kraft Pulping: Lime is integral to the kraft process, the most commonly used pulping method.
  • Sulfite Pulping: Lime neutralizes acidic water discharged from sulfite pulping, promoting environmental sustainability.
  • Bleach Liquor Preparation: Lime, combined with chlorine, is used to produce calcium hypochlorite, a bleaching agent for pulp.

Water Treatment: Lime is involved in water treatment processes at paper mills, ensuring clean water is used and discharged safely.

Mill Liquid Wastes: As a coagulant, filtration conditioner, and neutralizing agent, lime helps in treating mill liquid wastes, facilitating efficient waste management.

By-product Recovery: Lime assists in the recovery of valuable by-products such as alcohol, calcium lignosulfonate, and yeast from pulp processing.
